The hunting is hard
seeing the toll that people pay
when violence is the risk to make it to the next moment
the next day
The fact that there are those who would lay down spikes for lives to drive over
ensnared in cruelty for which there is no justification
no amount that can be paid
That’s why I am a detective
this job requires sweat that few can muster
looking down the barrel of barrel busters
When the dankest darkest corners of life come to claim unjust dues
I am one woman in blue
rolling up my sleeves
I’ll stare right into criminals’ eyes and can breathe
“I’ll find you yet”
until the pieces come together
I may be the only one that can be
the beginning of coming to terms with grief
I am proud
I am strong
helping a little light trickle in tragedy
until I roll into the grave
I’m ready to be brave
